Water Efficiency

What is water efficiency?

Water efficiency reduces water wastage by measuring the amount of water required for a particular purpose and the amount of water used or delivered.

Examples of water efficient actions include monitoring taps for leaks, lower flow taps, flow tap aerators and regulators, installing displacements devices inside toilet cisterns, as well as, changing behavioural habits.

Solutions for water efficiency focus on reducing both the amount of potable and non-potable water used in buildings. A crucial part of deploying water efficiency relies on the influence tenants can have in water efficiency through behavioural changes and also in the design phase by implementing innovative water efficient products.

Why Water Efficiency?

With increasingly stringent building regulations and new minimum water efficiency requirements, it is necessary to look closer at different levels of improvement to the water performance of buildings, among them water-saving devices, water-efficient construction, design and renovations, and measuring buildings’ water performance.

Sustainable water-use policies have been slow to evolve both within the EU, and globally. Water demand has generally been managed through water pricing. For instance, the EU Water Framework Directive requires EU Member States to charge end-users for water services with a negative impact on the environment, such as pumping and supply systems.

While Europe is largely considered as having adequate water resources, water scarcity and drought is an increasingly frequent and widespread phenomenon in the European Union. It is expected that after 2030, Available Water Supplies In The Mediterranean Will Fall Below Demand. Buildings in drought-stressed regions will increasingly need to contend with new water restrictions, such as The Mandatory 25 Percent Reduction Imposed In California.

How does Water Efficiency benefit you?

Water efficiency is one of the few methods that can positively address both climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Water efficiency can help companies meet their organisational climate targets and governmental water targets whilst reducing pressure on existing infrastructure needs. It can help reduce water and energy bills for households and businesses alike and offers expert opportunities for business innovation.

Additionally, efficient water solutions make a big contribution to scores received for green building certification schemes such as LEED and BREEAM.
